My Holiday in la France!

hey

So as some of you probably know already, I recently(-ish) spent ten days in la belle France, which is why my posting schedule has been a bit all over the place lately. I say recently-ish because I actually came back about a month ago (and I also just love massacring the English language with my made up words 😉 ).

Anyway, I was meant to post this ages ago, but only just got around to writing it this week. I know what you’re thinking… “How is some sixteen year old who spends

map france

Here’s a not-so-accurate-but-good-enough-to-give-you-a-vague-idea map of where Navarrenx is.

most of her time surfing the internet sooo busy?” And the answer to that is: I’m not. I just love to procrastinate. Also, it’s likely that you weren’t thinking that at all, but in my mind everyone else is as judgmental as I am.

Moving on… my travels abroad! Back in 2010, my family and I moved to a little medieval village called Navarrenx in the South-West of France. We lived there for a few years, and  moved back to Ireland two summers ago. As we hadn’t returned since, we thought we’d make a trip down, enjoy the sunny weather, eat some baguettes and see how the old town was doing.

ramparts

Enormous stone ramparts built hundreds of years ago surround the village.

Now I’m going to skip over the whole taking-the-plane-slash-renting-a-car part of this trip, but being the pessimist that I am, I did write a whole post about the 10 Things I Hate About Travelling, where I outline the more tedious aspects of travelling in detail. We arrived in Navarrenx on a slightly-overcast Tuesday afternoon. Despite the weather, it’s hard not to be impressed by the 16th century Ramparts that greet you upon your arrival. The town has about 1000 inhabitants and was recently named one of the ‘Plus Beaux Villages de France‘ (i.e. one of the most beautiful villages of France). Navarrenx’s 500 year old stone houses with pointy roofs and shuttered windows certainly don’t disappoint the “quaint french town” stereotype.

Of course, the first thing we did after entering the village was head straight to Carrefour Express – the local supermaket – and buy cheese, baguettes and a personal favourite of mine, cigarettes russes (which literally translates to Russian Cigarettes, but are really just super tasty tuile biscuits).

The next day, like every Wednesday since the 1800s, was Market Day. The Marché is held in the town square next to the Mairie (the town hall) and church, where farmers and artisans from around the area come to sell their goods. Now in general, Navarrenx is a pretty quiet village – and I’m talking ‘they could shoot a zombie movie there’ quiet – but Market days are the one time people make the effort to come out and support the local produce.

market.jpg

You can find everything at the market from seasonal fruit and veg to cheese, jewelery and woodwork. There’s also the ever popular poissonier, a.k.a. the fishmonger. Let’s just say the aroma of his stand really adds to the ambiance in the town square

Now one of the things that takes some getting used to in France – especially inthe countryside – is that businesses have very specific opening hours. Shops have half days on Sundays, are closed on Mondays and have a ‘lunch break’ from 12am-4pm for the rest of the week. Naturally, it’s always a disappointment when you run out of bread for lunch and realise its 12:01am. Luckily, since I’ve left, the Navarrenxians come up with a solution to this problem; vending machines. And not just any vending machines. A pizza vending machine and of course, a baguette vending machine (we are in France after all) serving fresh bread all day long. How great is that?

pizza machine.jpg

The amazing ‘Pizza des Remparts’ vending machine, Ladies and Gentlemen. Fresh Pizza 24/7. Though it is to be noted that you do have to idiotically stand outside the machine for 3 minutes before actually getting each pizza. After the fourth pizza you start to get a bit board.

On Friday, I went to get my hair cut Chez Gizelle, the hairdressers I used to go to when I lived in France. One thing you learn when living in a French village is that there are two businesses that are always incredibly successful and that’s hair salons and pharmacies. I mean if the French President announced that the world was ending, I guarantee that half of the population would go to the pharmacy and quickly purchase as many medicines as possible, while the other half would head to the hair salon to make sure they looked a la mode for the apocalypse. The tiny village of Navarrenx alone has three hair salons and three pharmacies – and they’re always packed. Another, lesser known fact outside of France is that hairdressers are in fact secret intelligence agencies – or in other words, the rendez-vous spot of every gossip within a five mile radius. Seriously, you go in there wanting to get a hair cut and come out knowing that the photographer has a gambling problem, the baker used to work for the C.I.A. and that the mademoiselle across the street may or may not be related to the Queen of England.

pyrenees.jpg

The Pyrenees Mountains (my photography definitely doesn’t do them justice, but hopefully it gives you an idea of how impressive they look)

After spending a few days in the quiet village, I decided to meet up with one of my french friends and take a trip up to the nearest city, Pau. Unlike Navarrenx, the old streets of Pau were filled with people. We walked along the Boulevard des Pyrénées, where as you can guess, we had a great view of the Pyrenees. The mountains were still covered in snow, and my dad and brothers actually went up skiing one weekend during our stay (I didn’t because I tend to avoid doing any form of physical activity). We then walked passed the impressive chateau of King Henri IV  and around the city centre. The weather was lovely and my friend brought me to what was apparently rumoured to be the best ice cream place in town (a.k.a. an ice cream van in the town square). To be fair, she wasn’t completely exaggerating – I bought a litchi, rose and raspberry flavoured sorbet, and she bought a licorice flavoured ice-cream – both were pretty delicious 🙂

So all in all, I have to say the trip was a success. I think because I’d already lived in France so long, the holiday didn’t really have that ‘wow’ factor that comes with discovering someplace new. But I got to see old friends, eat croissants everyday and binge-watch french Netflix, which of course is the really important thing to do when on holiday abroad. In retrospect, it probably would have been a smarter idea to go during the summer time when the local swimming pool’s open and its a bit busier, so remember that if you plan on visiting that part of France. Still, it was a really nice break!

I love traveling and it’s something I really wanted to try and include in my blog as much as possible. Are you guys planning any exciting trips away? Let me know what you guys thought of my first Artsy.Teen.Travels post in the comments below!

10 Things I HATE about Traveling

hey

I hope you’ve all been enjoying your weekend! I’ve actually just come back from a ten-day holiday in la belle France which was a lot of fun (comment down below if you’d like me to do a post about my stay there 🙂 ). I love visiting new places, but let’s be honest… there are some things about traveling that everyone hates. So, without further ado, here’s my list of 10 things I hate about traveling. Enjoy!

  1. Packing

Now I don’t know about you, but every single time I travel I wait until the night before my flight to pack my suitcase. And we both know that’s it’s not just a simple matter of packing my suitcase. Oh no. First I have to google the weather forecast to make sure that I’m bringing appropriate clothing, then I have to spend ages coordinating outfits because for some reason whenever I go abroad I turn into some big fashionista. After that, I have to put all my stupid little toiletries into little zip log bags and make sure I still have enough place in my  bag to bring souvenirs back with me.

  1. Security

I think it’s safe to say that I’m one of the least rebellious people in the world. I follow rules, I do my homework, I don’t even play those violent video games that my brother loves so much. So why is it that whenever I’m going through airport security I’m convinced that I’ve magically turned into a convicted criminal? Everyone else is calmly putting their electronics and shampoo on the conveyor-belt-thing and I’m over here freaking out that they’re going to find a load of explosives in my backpack.

  1. Blocked ears

There are three things that really annoy me in life; empty toothpaste tubes, mosquito bites and blocked ears. And I don’t care what people say – ‘eat chewing gum’ or ‘hold your breath’ – because as soon as that plane takes off, my ears will get blocked and I will be half deaf for the next three days.

  1. Showers

It’s my firm belief that the UN should come up with some sort of universal shower regulations because I just give up. Every time I use a new shower it takes me 5-6 working days to figure out how to turn the thing on and then another week to learn how to adjust the damn temperature.

  1. Time zones

Ah… time zones a.k.a. the reason I’m waking up at 2 a.m. every morning. But really jet lag doesn’t even bother me that much. What bother’s me is that for my entire vacation I have no clue what time of the day it is because half of my electronic devices have changed time automatically while the other half’s still 4 hours behind. And as for my watch, I would rather calculate what time it is for my entire holiday because I’m just too lazy to manually change the hour.

  1. Wi-Fi

It’s a well known scientific fact that today’s generation of living organisms need Wi-Fi to survive (and yes, nowadays plants do have laptops). So believe me when I say the struggle to connect to wi-fi in a new place is a serious one. How else can I send photos to my friends and make them jealous? I mean I could be camping in the middle of the Sahara desert and I would still be asking the camels for the Wi-Fi code.

  1. Google

You know that thing when you go abroad, look something up on the internet and discover that you can no longer read English? But then you realise that google does that annoying thing where it automatically switches to the countries google and everything’s in Mandarin Chinese? Actually, I’ve never been to China so that might not even be true, but you know what I mean!

  1. Family Road Trips

I come from a pretty big family, so any kind of travel is a bit of an ordeal. But a few years ago, my family decided to drive 15 hours from France to Italy and can I just say memories of that road trip still haunt me at night. Seriously, I have no idea how we didn’t all kill each other.

  1. Different Currencies

Despite the fact that I’ve spent a pretty high percentage of my life studying maths, I still suck at currency conversion. I went to London on a school trip one year and I still have no idea how much money I spent over there. Actually, thinking back on it every single shop keeper I met probably ripped me off and I didn’t realise it.

  1. Plane food

You know in Harry Potter 4 when they have the Triwizard Tournament and the champions have to compete in three deadly challenges? Yeah, well one of those challenges should have been who can eat the most plane food because I swear that stuff is lethal. Forget dragons, try finishing a plate of congealed stew and cold rice Harry!

Well, that’s it for today! Can you guys relate or am I just insanely negative? Let me know in the comments if I forgot any other irritating aspects of travel and have a great week!

How To Stay Organised

So, I’m naturally quite a disorganised person. I’m forgetful, I procrastinate constantly , I’m always late and my desk is a huge mess.  I’m the type of person who does my homework on bus. I’m that annoying classmate who always has to borrow a geometry set before maths exams. I’m that one friend who says I’ll get back to you later, but never will.

The worst part is that I’m in denial of how unorganised I am, so I’m always trying to convince myself that it’s a good idea to stupid things like plan events, get involved in projects, start a blog… 😉

Just last month, I thought it would be brilliant idea to plan a surprise birthday party for my friend. First of all, you should know that I only remembered it was her birthday a week beforehand. Then, I had to go through the agony of organising a venue (a task which I ended up entrusting to my mother – making a reservation is just too much responsibility for me). Finally I had to sort out the guest lists – and can I just say that getting people to confirm whether they are free or not is a nightmare (not to mention that my social skills are as poor as my organisation skills).

Anyway, in the end everything did work out all right, but I think it’s fairly obvious that organisation is not one of my greatest talents. However, I have managed to prevent my life from turning into complete chaos with a few helpful tricks I’ve picked up over the years. Hopefully, you’ll find them useful to!

  • To-do Lists

At the risk of sounding cliche, I would honestly get nothing done if it weren’t for To-Do Lists. As simple as it sounds, just having all my tasks for the day laid out in front of me makes me way more productive!

  • Set reminders

OK, so you know when someone gives you a piece of important information that you absolutely can’t forget and instead of writing it down, you convince yourself that you have the best memory in the world? But, two weeks later, lo and behold you’ve missed your doctor’s appointment, job interview and best friend’s birthday party.

Seriously, the amount of times I’ve written a little ‘X’ on my hand and told myself I’ll remember to do something is unbelievable. To avoid this situation, set reminders on your phone for the day before your event, so you’re sure to remember!

  • Timetable Tip

If you’re like me and can never remember your timetable, just take a picture of it and set it as the lock screen wallpaper on your phone. It may not be that stylish, but it’s a total life saver!

  • Sticky Notes

If there’s something you really want to remember, jot it down on a sticky note and stick it up somewhere you won’t miss it like your mirror or computer. Sounds simple, but it works!

  • Invest in a pinboard

If you have tons of paper all over your desk just get a bulletin board and pin up all the loose sheets. This way you can keep your desk tidy and actually read what’s written on each sheet of paper when you’re bored!.

Well, those are all my tips for today. Do you have any organisation life hacks? If so, leave them in the comments below – I’d love to know!

Also, I’m so sorry, I know I haven’t uploaded in ages , but I’m actually on holidays in France at the moment and haven’t had my laptop with me! Of course, an organised person would have prepared posts beforehand… ;). Anyways, don’t worry – next week I’ll be back to posting regularly.

Have a great week!

Just a quick post to say Happy St. Patrick’s Day! As you may already know that I’m Irish, so I felt obligated to post something today. Here’s a quick tutorial for making adorable little shamrocks in about 30 seconds. They are perfect for decorations or face painting.

I’m headed off to a parade now, but I hope you all have a fantastic day!

You Know You’re An Artsy Teen When…

1. You never throw anything away because you’re convinced that “it’ll come in useful”
Admit it. There’s a box under your bed full of useless objects that you’ve been hanging onto for ten years and that you’ve NEVER used. And to be honest, you probably never will!

2. Pinterest is your kind of social media
Facebook and twitter are OK, but the day you discovered Pinterest changed your life forever. And whats more, you don’t just spend hours browsing Pinterest. Well OK, yes you do, but unlike most people, you actually make the DIYs you pin!

3. You can wield a gun better than James Bond – a glue gun that is 😉
Its no secret that a glue gun is every DIY-er’s best friend. And no wonder – there’s basically nothing that a bit of hot glue can’t fix!

4. You refer to your messy bedroom as your “artistic space”
So yeah, technically speaking you haven’t cleaned your room in six weeks and maybe you can’t see your desk underneath the pile of junk on top of it. But honestly that’s just because you’re an artist. The creative mind doesn’t like structure. Also your lazy, but that’s besides the point.

5. You’re the ‘art’ kid at school
Ever since you made that awesome poster in primary school or won that drawing competition, everyone knows you as the ‘art’ kid. You rule the art classroom and all the other students calls you the ‘Art Master’ (OK, no they don’t – but you get the idea 😉 ) .

6. You doodle on everything
Literally, its slightly worrying. Your notes, your homework journal, your hand… everything around you is just covered in ink.

7. Since you were a kid, you’ve been getting craft kits for Christmas
All artsy teens have that one cabinet in their room full of all the craft kits they’ve collected over the years. Candle making, crocheting, vase painting, DIY jewlery… seriously, we own every craft kit imaginable.

8. You get random bursts of motivation that can last anywhere from 2 minutes to 4 hours

We all have those mornings when we wake up and suddenly we’re inspired to write a novel or redecorate our entire room. Unfortunately this motivation usually doesn’t last long enough for anything really important to get accomplished.

9. You’re a problem solver
Artsy teens love a challenge. In fact, coming up with ideas to solve a problem is our idea of fun!

10. You’re unique and individual
Where’s the fun in ‘following the crowd’? You have your own sense of style, your own ideas, your own opinions and don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise.

5 things to do when you’re on holidays

I’m not sure what the school calendar’s like in other countries, but here in Ireland we are currently on mid term break. Now I don’t know about you, but whenever holidays approach, I convince myself that I’m going to spend my time off being amazingly productive. I’ll write a novel. I’ll exercise every morning. I’ll do all my homework the Friday before the holidays.

Yeah, as if. In reality, I ultimately end up lying on my bed staring at my phone all week.

Not that there’s anything wrong with eating junk food and watching Netflix, but time off is a great opportunity to do all the things you don’t have time to do when you’re busy with school.
So, here are five things to do during the holidays…

1. Read that book

You know, that book. The one you’ve been meaning to read for ages but just haven’t gotten around to doing it? Maybe it was recommended to you by a family member, or maybe you have to read it for English class. Either way, it’s just been sitting there, gathering dust on your bedside table for weeks. Well, good news – this is the perfect time to read it. So as soon as you’ve finished reading this post, go get a cup of tea, or coffee, or whatever beverage you enjoy and get reading!

2. Revamp your room

Winter’s finally over (or so I’ve heard – it’s still rainy and cold over here), so that’s means it’s the perfect time to give your bedroom a good clean (or as I call, move the pile of my belongings from the floor, to my desk) and revamp your room decor. And I don’t mean just go on pinterest and contemplate revamping your decor. I mean physically embracing your inner artsy teen, getting out your glue gun, scissors and sharpies and making some stylish DIY decor. I’m actually working on a room decor post at the moment which I’ll be publishing shortly, so hopefully that will give you some ideas!

3. Do some baking

One thing I personally love doing during the holidays, or any time of the year really, is doing a bit of baking. If you’re stuck for ideas, allow me to recommend two amazing recipes for Lemon Cake and Chocolate Chip Cookies. Seriously, you should try them out 😉 .

4. Practice!

Whether you play an instrument or a sport, make sure you take advantage of all your free time and get some extra training/ practice sessions in. Ironically, I always seem to neglect my piano playing during the holidays, but really I should be practicing even more than usual.

5. Organise a day out

OK, so maybe this last bit of advice is a little hypocritical as I actually haven’t left my house all week, but I swear I’ve tried to organise something with my friends, they’re just all too “busy”. Which is strange, because I know for fact that none have them have social lives. Anyway, planning a trip with your friends is always tons of fun, whether it’s going into town and having lunch out, or going for a walk (not really my thing, but each to their own) and having a picnic.
So, that’s all for today… I know this was a short post, but as I mentioned, I’ve got some really fun DIY posts planned for the not-so-distant future, so keep an eye out for them!

The Best Cookie Recipe EVER

Hey Artsy Teens,

Happy Valentine’s day! I hope you’re all having a good week. I was actually going to post this recipe earlier, but I then I thought better not – there still might be a few people determined to stick to all those “stay healthy” new year’s resolutions. But I think I’ve left a sufficient amount of time for everyone to have given up on them by now, right? Also, I realize that calling these the best cookies ever might be a bit presumptuous but hey, if you really want to prove me wrong you’ll just have to try making them yourself 😉 !

Ingredients

cookies 6

1 cup butter, melted

1 cup caster/granulated sugar

1/2 cup packed light brown sugar

2 tsp vanilla extract

2 eggs

4 cups all purpose/plain flour

1 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1 1/2 cup chocolate chips (I saved a few to put on top of the cookies)

1 tbsp cocoa powder

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180’C/350’F.
  2. Cream the butter and sugars together.
  3. Mix in vanilla extract and eggs.
  4. Add the flour, baking soda, cocoa powder, and salt.
  5. Mix well and add chocolate chips.
  6. Take about 2 tbsps of the mixture and using your hands, roll the balls and place on a cookie sheet*. Flatten each cookie with a fork and press a few chocolate chips on top.
  7. Bake for 9-11 minutes until the cookies look golden (the cookies will still be soft to the touch, but don’t worry – they’ll harden as they cool). Enjoy!

*If the cookie dough is a bit sticky, rub some vegetable oil onto your hands to prevent the dough from sticking to your fingers.

5 things to make with that random piece of cardboard

Yes, I know…that’s quite a bizarre title. Let me explain.

The other day, I bought something (isn’t that specific) and when I opened the packaging and took out this unnamed purchase, inside I found a thin, square sheet of cardboard. The thing is, this sheet of cardboard served no evident purpose whatsoever. It wasn’t there to provide support or give information. No, it’s sole purpose was to just… be there.  Kind of like that one teacher at school who never really teaches anything, but just sits there for “adult supervision”.

And this isn’t the first time this has happened to me. Oh no, it’s happened several times, with several purchases – clothes, shoes, food, electronics, you name it.

And that got me thinking… is this some sort of conspiracy ? I mean, surely companies aren’t trying to waste money. Is there some sort of unwritten code around the world that cardboard has to be included with each purchase? Are packaging companies being blackmailed by cardboard manufacturers? Is it even cardboard, or is it some sort of espionage device recording our every move?

Yeah, that escalated quickly. Anyways, luckily for us artsy teens there are tons of ways to put these supposedly purposeless pieces of cardboard to good use. I’ve been working on this post for quite a while now (editing the photos took ages), so I hope you guys enjoy it!

  1. A Makeshift Paint Palettepaint cover 2

Now I’m no professional painter, but every once in a while I do like to pick up a paintbrush and attempt (unsuccessfully) to become the next Picasso. Seeing as I don’t own an actual palette, during these random bursts of motivation I tend to use a piece of cardboard instead and, trust me that works just fine!

2. DIY Bracelet Holder

cardboard 1 cover

If you’re anything like me, some part of your room/desk/shelf is covered with tangled heaps of jewelry. Or maybe you’re a normal, organised person -who knows. Anyway, for this simple DIY just take a square sheet of cardboard, cut it to desired size, roll it into a tube-shape and staple the sides together. Then, just slip on your bracelets and you’re done!

3. DIY Stencils

cardboard 2 cover

Stencils probably aren’t something you use on a regular basis, but now and then they do come in handy. Instead of wasting money and buying them in a shop, you can simply print off a stencil template at home and cut out the shape from cardboard. Then you can spend your money on something else. Like food 🙂

To download the flower stencil I used, click here.

4. DIY Vintage Bookmarks

bookmark cover

I love reading and one of my greatest struggles in life will always be my inability to hold on to bookmarks. Every year, I’ll get about seventy eight bookmarks from friends, families, bookshops etc.,  but whenever I’m actually reading a book I can never find one. Then I end up using random bits and pieces laying about my room which will inevitably end up falling out of the book.

So, I thought I’d improve my chances of finding a bookmark by making a few more (which I’ve probably lost by now) out of my sheet of cardboard.

As you can probably tell, it’s not a very complicated process. Just cut out strips of cardboard and decorate them with pretty paper, drawings and just whatever takes your fancy. Making them look “Vintage” is not a requirement, but seeing as you can basically stick some old newspaper onto cardboard and call it “Vintage”, I decided it was my easiest option.

5. DIY Diamond Garland

garland collage

This DIY is a simple way to add a pop of colour to your room. All you need to do is cut out your desired shapes from the cardboard (for the diamond design I used click here), colour them in with pencils and give them a black outline with a permanent marker. Then, simply tape them onto a long piece of string/wool and hang the garland up in your room!

How to make 2016 the best year ever!

 Make an Inspiration Board

pinboard 2

A great way to kick off 2016 is by putting together an inspiration board. This literally takes a few minutes and trust me, it’s worth it. All you need is a pin board (they’re pretty inexpensive and really useful) and a bunch of photos, sketches, postcards, your 2016 bucket list and pictures to pin up!

This inspiration board is a great way to stay motivated throughout the year and adds a pop of colour to your room, which is an added bonus 😉

Change up your Playlist

mobile

It’s easy to forget just how much music can effect our mood. During the winter months I find my playlist filling up with piano ballads and before you know it Adele has me feeling all nostalgic, reminiscing about something that never even happened to me!

Start off the new year by getting together a new playlist full of fun, positive tunes and you’ll feel ready to take on the world! To help you guys out, I put together a New Year Playlist on Spotify that you can check out:

Get a Calendar

calendar-660670_640

Organization is definitely not my forte, so this year I’ve decided to invest in a calendar to keep track of my busy schedule and non-existent social life. Of course you can use a calendar app or Google calendar, but remember paper calendars also double as room decor!

Find a New Hobby

camera-991619_640

Now I’m not really into the whole “New Year, New Me” thing (cause let’s face it, January 1st never improved anyone’s personality) but I do think it’s a great time to try and find some New Hobbies! Whether you’ve always wanted to learn how to play the piano, join a basketball team or take up photography, this is your chance to get out of your comfort zone and do it!

This year I’ve taken up knitting (I think I’ve discovered a hidden talent by the way) and dancing (well, ok…maybe my mum forced me into one this because I don’t do any sports), but whatever the case, find something you want to try and go for it!

Make time to see your Friends

youth-570881_640

Sometimes I’m just too lazy to pick up the phone and organise something to do with my friends and other times I just get too caught up in schoolwork, blogging and extracurricular activities. But, whenever I do go out with my friends I always have a really good time!

This year, I’m definitely going to try and make an effort to meet up with my friends more often. At the risk of sounding much more sentimental than I am in reality, I have to say … the internet’s great and all, but nothing beats having a laugh with your friends!

Put together a Bucket List

bucket list

As I said in one of my previous posts, I’ve never been good at sticking to New Year’s Resolutions. So this year I did something a little different – I put together a list of goals and projects that I hope to accomplish in 2016.

I actually did this with a bunch of friends and family on New Years Eve and it was tons of fun. Not only did we write down our own personal goals, but we also wrote down challenges for each other to work towards throughout the year.

And don’t just stick to basic goals like “get fit” or “ace my exams”, think outside of the box! What do you really want to do this year? Dye your hair purple? Build a robot? Travel to the other side of the world?

I’m not saying that your goals should be totally far fetched, but you’d be surprised what you can do if you put your mind to it. A lot of things are much more achievable than you imagine, all you have to do is put in the work!

And on that note, go make 2016 your best year so far!
